本书对现代中国人的生活，既非维护其完美，亦非揭发其罪恶。因此与新近甚多“黑幕”小说迥乎不同。既非对旧式生活进赞词，亦非为新式生活做辩解。

只是叙述当代中国男女如何成长，如何过活，如何爱，如何恨，如何争吵，如何宽恕，如何受难，如何享乐，如何养成某些生活习惯，如何形成某些思维方式，尤其是，在此谋事在人、成事在天的尘世生活里，如何适应其生活环境而已。
